Making the Most of Your Small Outdoor Space

Make it Cozy

Your space is already small, so why not do you best to make it cozy & comfortable? You want your space to scream “Sit down, stay awhile.”

Little elements such as making the area conversational, the addition of table knick knacks and fence decoration adds that “let’s hang out” vibe.

Don’t forget your pillows & blankets of course! … maybe save the blankets for fall. I did manage to snag a deal on these outdoor pillows from Walmart, I mixed up the pattern in an effort to not make everything so black and white.

Incorporate Greenery

Go wild with the greenery! You are outdoors after all, why not add as many plants as possible?

I still want to add a few of mixed potted plants, but for now, I have two hanging ferns (my favorite hanging plant because it reminds me of New Orleans… not to mention they are fairly easy to take care of), and a blueberry bush.

I also kept my DIY hanging planter filled with herbs and peppers close… its a nice conversational piece. 😉

Decorate Your Fence

Yeah I said it! I feel like this sounds like a no brainer, but I have never been in a backyard with a decorated fence.

I wanted to make this an extension of my home, and I thought what better way than adding signage?

I also added a beautiful wind chime from At Home – I felt like it matched the aesthetic.

PS. Make sure you are picking up weather resistant signs!

Add All Sorts of Lighting

Adding beautiful Edison Lights will make any space homey and comfortable. But also consider other types of lighting.

Here I have added (weather proof) lanterns and candle holders.

I wanted to incorporate different shapes and colors, as most of the space is black and white.

Two of these lanterns light up simply with a tea light! The other is a battery operated lantern – making all easy to take care of and keep up with.

Get an Outdoor Rug

Corey thought I was crazy for wanting a rug outside so badly.

Does it really serve a purpose other than looking pretty? No… but it gives the exact vibe I was looking for. ❤️ Can you picture this space without a rug? It just wouldn’t be the same.

… with most of these items, be sure it’s weather resistant! This rug is from Target & we caught it right when it went on sale!

Let Your Man Add Something

I’ll be honest y’all, I decorated this space (as I do with most of the rooms) all by myself.

HOWEVER, Corey actually really loves and enjoys this area in our backyard… so of course he needed to add a little something.

Utilize Pinterest

Last but not least, Pinterest was a huge help for me picturing this space in my backyard.

Decorating such a small area is hard… so pin to your hearts desire! Figure out the aesthetic you are going for, and decorate until you get it right.

Spaces in your home, and even outdoors, should feel comfortable and inviting. So be sure to make it your own!
